Introduction

The realm of metaverse technology has picked up pace in recent times. It is simply defined as a virtual environment whereby by intermixing AR(Augmented Reality) and VR(Virtual Reality) one can enjoy with their friends, go shopping, or even music concerts virtually. It is one of the Future-oriented technologies which will enhance the concept of virtual reality.

The internet is about to take another giant step forward. Immersive virtual and augmented reality has taken off because of the pandemic’s strict lockdowns. Real-time communication is possible between users of this virtual environment, who may share their experiences and chat with one another.

Metaverse Definition

If you believe Microsoft’s description of Metaverse, it’s “a new internet.” It will be necessary to deploy AI applications to analyze the volume, variety, and speed of data generated by users in the future. Deep neural networks and deep learning for accurate hand tracking and eye tracking are anticipated to be employed in virtual reality (VR) technologies in the metaverse.

Predictions about how metaverse will affect the future

Below listed are some of the predictions about Metaverse which will affect the future-

Positive Effect

In terms of environmental benefits, the biggest one is reducing traffic, accidents, pollution, and, ultimately, global warming that will ensue from the elimination of human travel. It would be more convenient for political and corporate leaders to have conferences in the virtual world, saving them both time and money.

This will help to reduce other polluting work activities, according to an American news website called CleanTechnica. The Metaverse might be used for military training, such as pilots flying airplanes in virtual reality. This would save emissions.

It might save concert promoters and other event organizers a lot of money. Last year, rapper Travis Scott performed virtually in Fortnite, drawing in 12.3 million viewers.

Negative Effect

Some experts are worried that the metaverse’s broad adoption may lead to a significant rise in emissions. While cutting carbon emissions by eliminating travel, Metaverse’s dependence on virtual reality (VR) technology and data centers will harm the environment. AI is used in data centers to track eye and hand movements, but cloud services are used in virtual reality. Such facilities use a considerable quantity of energy.

According to a study by UK-based digital transformation consultant ECS, training a single AI model may create around 626k pounds of carbon dioxide, which is more than five times the lifetime output of an ordinary vehicle.

As a consequence, the metaverse relies heavily on cloud services. According to a 2020 Lancaster University study, if 30% of players switch to cloud gaming platforms by 2030, carbon emissions would grow by 30% over present gaming levels. The metaverse will also need very high-resolution images, which will add to the overall energy use.

Data centers have made several changes to enhance their environmental performance in the last year. A goal of zero emissions throughout the whole value chain for Meta, or as we know it, Facebook, has been set by 2030.

As part of its Azure cloud platform, Microsoft has vowed to operate it entirely using renewable energy by 2025. The company also plans to replenish more water than it uses by 2030 and get accreditation for zero-waste production by that time.

Ways in which the Metaverse will affect the future

Cryptocurrency and digital tokens like Non-Fungible Tokens are only the beginning of a new Metaverse (NFTs). Essentially, blockchain is a digital ledger in which a growing number of entries, or blocks, are linked together via the use of encryption.

Any object with a unique identity, such as art, gaming products, commemorative artifacts, etc., may benefit from the non-fungible token called NFT. Your blockchain address is used to store NFTs.

People’s experiences with the metaverse will determine its future. Tokens issued by the corporations that enable these virtual connections will eventually allow users to purchase virtual avatars and virtual lands and organize parties and meet-ups with virtual friends.

According to Dominic Ryder, CEO of vEmpire, there are no limits to what may be accomplished. A Sandbox is an excellent tool for those with a creative streak who want to build their adventures. Users own Decentraland, an Ethereum-based virtual environment where they may play games, participate in activities, and even own virtual property parcels. Decentraland is built on Ethereum.

On the future of Metaverse, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said that “Privacy and safety will be key to the metaverse.” Governments and corporations must make significant investments to offer green, clean, and renewable energy in the interest of the environment.
